The Grid:
Structure, Pattern, and Multiple Units

Live Online Workshop
Thursdays, January 23 - February 20, 2025
3:00-4:30 Eastern / 1:00-2:30 Central / 12:00-1:30 Pacific

Grids are integral to the building of our homes, streets, and cities. We see them as calendars, patterns, fences, windows, puzzles and games. This seminar class explores how, in artwork, grids can provide an underlying structure, be involved conceptually, and present options for groupings and installations. Participants will explore different layouts for creating patterns, how grids can be used compositionally, and the flexibility of working with individual modules to create larger pieces. Using mixed media techniques, participants will be encouraged to investigate their individual interests in response to the presented material.

Topics include:

  • the art historical evolution of the grid

  • artists and movements that incorporated the grid visually and conceptually

  • variations of the grid that form the basis of patterns

  • how to manipulate the grid to form an underlying structure for paintings

  • how working with modules in grid type formations offers installation options for related works.

  • required readings and videos for discussion

“For the past 100 years or so the basic geometric grid has proved an irresistible form for many visual artists. Perhaps there’s something about the possibility of ordering the world and the restless nature of the artist’s mind that has fueled the allure and ambivalence of this relationship. Sometimes the simplest of concepts prove to be the ones most ripe for interpretation.” ~ Melissa Stern in Hyperallergic
